Which Bambu Filaments Need a Hardened Steel Nozzle?

There is no useful universal answer to “which filament needs hardened steel?” without naming the material and nozzle. Bambu’s hotend and product sources distinguish ordinary PLA from filled materials such as PETG-CF and PLA-CF, and they also publish diameter limits. This crosswalk focuses on those named Bambu grades across A1-series and P1-series nozzles; it does not generalize to every brand or imply FilamentFit has performed wear tests.

Start with the product, not the family label

Material families contain products with different additives and guidance. Bambu PLA Basic is listed as a standard filament and has a different nozzle profile from PLA-CF. PETG-CF is likewise distinct from regular PETG. If a package only says PLA, PETG or carbon fiber, locate the full product name and manufacturer instructions before choosing nozzle material. A rule for one branded composite does not automatically establish a rule for another formulation.

PETG-CF and abrasive guidance

The Bambu PETG-CF page and hotend charts identify hardened nozzle requirements and exclude 0.2 mm for the cited machine families. The P1-series source cautions against stainless for this product. For A1 mini, the current Wiki also warns about abrasive CF/GF materials without a hardened nozzle. These sources support a targeted upgrade decision. They do not provide a comparative lifespan measurement or prove that all hardened aftermarket nozzles are equivalent.

PLA-CF needs its own lookup

Bambu PLA-CF is a separate product with its own nozzle table. Its source excludes a 0.2 mm nozzle and describes hardened nozzle considerations. Do not treat it as regular PLA Basic merely because both products share the PLA family name. The P0 evidence records for PLA-CF and PETG-CF are separate, and our public finder does not generate a positive PLA-CF combination because the exact full multi-axis evidence set has not yet been curated.

Nozzle metal and diameter both matter

A hardened 0.2 mm nozzle and a stainless 0.4 mm nozzle differ on two axes; one cannot be substituted for the other by label alone. Read the product source’s exact chart and check the installed diameter. A filament can require abrasive resistance while also needing a larger opening. Where the available evidence only addresses one dimension, the finder refuses a full compatibility conclusion instead of filling the remaining gap with inference.

A repeatable pre-purchase workflow

Identify the product, printer family, nozzle material and diameter. Open both the printer hotend reference and the filament listing, then compare the exact row or warning. Check feeder constraints separately for automatic systems and identify the spool. The manufacturer pages are checked sources, not independent experiments. If a page has changed since October 19, 2026, revisit the claim and update the reviewed date before extending the rule or relying on this crosswalk.

Before you buy

  • Find the exact product page, not just a family name.
  • Read nozzle metal and diameter guidance together.
  • Check feeder and spool requirements as independent axes.
  • Do not infer wear life or aftermarket equivalence.
